As a Boilermaker, you’ll be trained to do many different kinds of jobs. You’ll build, maintain, and repair boilers, pressure vessels, storage and process tanks, and other containers that hold liquids and gases under high pressure.  Your work might also include installing and repairing air pollution equipment, installing heat-resistant materials in fireboxes and vessels. You may also find yourself installing and caring for the pipes used in dams and other structures.

The job is physically demanding so it’s a great fit for those who don’t want to sit at a desk all day. It’s also important to be safety-minded and follow safety rules to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Repair or replace defective pressure vessel parts, such as safety valves or regulators, using caulking, threading dies, welding equipment, or other metalworking machinery
  • Study blueprints to determine locations, relationships, or dimensions of parts
  • Read and use blueprints to locate and mark reference points for columns or plates on boiler foundations
  • Bolt or arc weld pressure vessel structures and parts together, using wrenches or welding equipment
  • Position, align and secure structural parts or related assemblies to boiler frames, tanks, or vats of pressure vessels
  • Shape or fabricate parts, such as stacks, uptakes, or chutes, to adapt pressure vessels, heat exchangers, or piping to current needs.
