Plumbers specialize in installing and repairing pipes that carry water, gas, or wastewater. You’ll help decide what pipes should be laid and take care of the installation of those pipes. Teamwork is important as you work with electricians and other Construction Craft professionals.

Plumbers typically get training in skills such as pipe cutting, soldering, draining, and local plumbing codes. Next you’ll probably train as an apprentice and then move on to become a licensed plumber.

Key Responsibilities

• Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances or fixtures using hand or power tools
• Measure, cut, thread, or bend pipe to required angle, using hand or power tools or machines
• Apply knowledge of safety procedures and plumbing codes
• Use pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, or pipe-bending machines
• Assemble pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment
• Review blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures
• Work with construction personnel in a team environment
• Estimate time, material, or labor costs for use in project plans
