Credit for Prior Learning
Many schools allow you to earn credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). PLA is a term used to describe learning gained outside a traditional classroom environment. Put another way, it's learning and knowledge you gained through any of the following:
- work experience
- participating in company training programs
- military training
- studying independently
- volunteering
- doing community service
- studying open source courseware.
Petrochem companies often hire students directly out of training programs. That means you could get a great job before you even graduate!
PLA is the evaluation of your life learning for college credit, certification, or advanced standing toward more education or training. Contact the Advising Office at any college to ask about PLA. Write down any training you’ve had and bring a copy of your work resume to help get the conversation started.
